    Introduction

    Importance of Salah

The five daily prayers, salah or namaz, are the second pillar of Islam, an obligatory form of ibadah (worship). They are the primary means with which to connect with Allah SWT. Salah is a means by which to worship our Creator, thank Him for all His provision and favours and ask of Him for our needs and desires.

The importance of salah is highlighted by the fact that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was called into the heavens during his Night Journey, to receive the Revelation to establish prayer directly from Allah SWT. Initially Allah SWT decreed 50 salah per day to be performed. This was sequentially reduced to 5 through the interventions of the Prophet ﷺ, on the advice of Prophet Musa AS. By the mercy of Allah SWT, these 5 prayers have the reward of 50.

Salah is directly linked to the Ka’bah, the House of God, built by the Prophet Ibrahim AS. The Ka’bah was established as the House of Worship of Allah SWT on this earth. Every salah is therefore performed facing the direction of the Ka’bah.

There is no greater deed than salah. It is the key to success in this world and the Akhira.

It is truly I. I am Allah! There is no god {worthy of worship} except Me. So worship Me {alone} and establish prayer for My remembrance [20:14]

    Basic Principles

    Wudu (Ablution)

One needs to be in a state of purity before praying to Allah SWT. Wudu involves cleaning parts of the body with water: the hands, the mouth, inside the nose, the face, the forearms, the hair, behind the neck and the ears and the feet. Each part is cleansed three times, the right side first, except for the hair, ears and neck which are done once [5:6].

Wudu is a blessing. It keeps us purified in the eyes of Allah SWT. It expiates sins. Wudu also keeps the body clean and prevents transmission of diseases and enables oral hygiene – we all know the importance of handwashing in this regard.

The key to Paradise is prayer, and the key to prayer is ablution [Tirmidhi]

On the Day of Judgement, the Muslims from the ummah of the Prophet Muhammad will be identified by the brightness of their arms and faces, due to their practice of wudu.

    How to Pray

Each prayer is made up of either two, three or four or rakats (cycles) of prayer. Each rakah involves standing, bowing and prostrating. Prior to commencing, one makes an intention (niyat) as to what they are praying. For example, “I am praying 4 rakat fard of Isha salah for Allah SWT, facing the Ka’bah.”

One begins in the standing position by raising their hands to the earlobes and saying takbir, Allahu Akbar (Allah is Great). The hands are then placed on ones chest/lower abdo (men) or upper chest (women).

Basic principles are that Surah Al Fatihah, the first surah of the Quran, is recited in each rakah, followed by another surah or passage from the Quran. The salah continues by bowing once and then prostrating twice, reciting the praise of Allah SWT in each position. After prostrating, one returns to the standing position. This signifies the end of one rakah.

Subsequent rakats are repeated as required. In the third and fourth rakats of any salah, only surah Al Fatihah is read when standing. In the second and the last rakats of each salah, after prostrating one kneels and sits on their legs. Additional praises of Allah SWT and the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ are recited, before ending with a dua.

    Categories of Salah

The rakats are classified as fard (obligatory), sunnah (as performed by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ), nafl (additional, voluntary but beneficial) and witr (most scholars class this as wajib or compulsory, others as sunnah).

    Obligatory (Fard)

Compulsory prayers for every Muslim. There are five daily salah at specific times throughout the day and a weekly congregational salah on Friday. Additionally, there is the funeral prayer.

    Five Daily Salah

    • Fajr. Morning prayer, before dawn. 2 sunnah 2 fard. Total 4 rakats.
    • Zohr. Midday prayer, just after the sun has passed its zenith. 4 sunnah, 4 fard, 2 sunnah, 2 nafl. Total 12 rakats.
    • Asr. Afternoon prayer. 4 sunnah 4 fard. Total 8 rakats.
    • Maghrib. Sunset prayer. 3 fard 2 sunnah 2 nafl. Total 7 rakats.
    • Isha. Night prayer. 4 sunnah, 4 fard, 2 sunnah, 2 nafl 3 witr 2 nafl. Total 17 rakats.

    Jummah

Friday is the best of days. On that day, Adam AS was created, sent down to earth and died. The Trumpet will sound on a Friday. It is greater before Allah SWT than the days of Eid [Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah].

The recitation of surah Al Kahf on a Friday will be a light for the believer until the next Friday [Al Hakim]. One should also send blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ by reciting as much darood sharif as possible. There are many blessings for walking to the masjid, arriving early and attentively listening to the imam. For each step, one attains forgiveness of sins, elevation of status and rewards equivalent to fasting and praying for one year [Tirmidhi].

Jummah midday prayers are obligatory for men to perform in congregation. Women usually pray at home but can also attend the masjid (mosque). Before setting out to the masjid, one should perform ghusl (full body wash) and wear their best clothes.

The imam gives a khutbah (sermon) on any selected religious topic in the local language followed by a generic collection of phrases in Arabic praising Allah SWT and the Messenger ﷺ (see below). Two rakah fard are then prayed in place of the 4 fard of the midday prayer. These four rakah are usually then prayed afterwards as sunnah.

    Janazah

The janazah or funeral prayer is an obligatory communal prayer, read in a congregation for every deceased Muslim. The body should be present, already washed and shrouded. The congregation reads behind the imam, standing side by side in rows as per usual, but there is no bowing or prostration.

It is one rakat with four takbirs (Allahu Akbar) said during the salah. The intention to pray for the deceased is made or one can simply make the intention of following behind the imam.

    • First takbir. Read Auzubillah and surah Al Fatihah (see below).
    • Second takbir. Read darood sharif (sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ).
    • Third takbir. Read a dua for the deceased. Can be any Arabic dua or in ones own language, asking for forgiveness for the deceased and relief from the trials of the grave.
    • Fourth takbir. Imam then finishes the salah with As salaam alaikum wa rakmatullah.

Praying the janazah should be said with sincerity and humility. It reminds us all of the certainty of death and gives us an opportunity to reflect on our level of spirituality and good deeds.

    Voluntary (Sunnah and Nafl)

There are many opportunities to perform sunnah and nafl salah during the day and at specific times in ones life. Whilst voluntary, the importance of praying these regularly are to deepen ones connection with Allah SWT. They allow us to connect with Him at times of need or guidance and also offer great blessings and rewards. Additionally, any deficiency in our fard salah will be made up from our sunnah and nafl salah [Tirmidhi].

    Sunnah

These are the rakah prayed regularly by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, before and after the fard rakah of the five prayers. They should not be missed without a good reason.

Whoever is regular with twelve rakah of Sunnah (prayer), Allah will build a house form him in Paradise: Four rakah before Zohr, two rakah after it, two rakah after Maghrib, two rakah after Isha, and two rakah before Fajr [Tirmidhi]

    Tahajjad

Tahajjud, also known as Qiam al Layl the Night Prayer, was obligatory for the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It comprises a minimum of 2 rakah but can be up to 12 rakah, in units of two. The Prophet ﷺ used to pray up to 10 rakah and finish with 1 rakah witr salah.

Tahajjud is performed after midnight, preferably during the last third of the night and having first slept. This is the most blessed time to pray and make dua. The sense of connection with Allah SWT at this time, when most people are asleep and our surroundings are peaceful, is extremely spiritually uplifting.

The best prayer after fard is the night prayer [Muslim]

There are huge rewards for praying tahajjud due to the believer breaking their sleep in the middle of the night to perform it. Some of its blessings include attaining closeness to Allah SWT, forgiveness of sins, glory in this world and the Akhira, protection from illnesses and admission to the higher levels of Jannah without hisab. No soul can imagine what delights are kept in store for them as a reward for what they used to do [32:17].

Our Lord Almighty descends to the lowest heaven in the last third of every night, saying: “Who is calling upon Me that I may answer him? Who is asking from Me that I may give him? Who is seeking My forgiveness that I may forgive him?” [Bukhari]

    Ishraq and Duha

Some scholars classify these salah as the same, just referred to with different names according to when they are prayed. Ishraq is prayed in the early morning, around 20 min after Fajr, usually 2-4 rakah. Duha (also known as Chast) is prayed in the mid to late morning before noon, 2-12 rakah.

Again, huge rewards are given for these salah, including forgiveness of all sins and ones daily needs fulfilled. If one reads Fajr in congregation then sits reciting zikr of Allah and then prays Ishraq, they are blessed with the equivalent of one Hajj (pilgimage) and one umrah (lesser pilgrimage).

    Istikhara

This is a special type of nafl prayed when one is facing an important decision in their life. One first does their own research about the decision(s) to be made and decides which path they will take. However this salah is also appropriate if one cannot decide.

Salat-al-istikhara can be prayed at any time, except immediately after fard, and comprises two rakat. As with anything in Islam, ones intention (niyat) is most important. The intention is for guidance from Allah SWT in order to make the best decision.

Having made the intention for istikhara salah, one prays two rakat as usual. After the salah has ended (or immediately before ending), one recites praises of Allah SWT and sends blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. One then recites dua-al-istikhara of the Prophet ﷺ whereby the specific matter of concern is mentioned mid way through the dua.

Allah SWT will guide the person to make the decision that is best for them. This will be through a feeling of ease about making the correct decision, or by making the path to the decision easy or difficult, according to whether the decision is the correct one or not. One should thus leave matters to Allah SWT, Al Alim the All Knowing, have complete trust in His Guidance and accept whatever path He chooses.

    Other Nafl

    • Tahiyyat ul Wudu. Two rakat performed after doing wudu. Rewards of Jannah [Bukhari].
    • Tayiyyat ul Masjid. Two rakat performed when entering a masjid [Muslim]. To greet the masjid and honour Allah SWT.
    • Salat ul Tawba. Two rakat asking sincerely for forgiveness of sins.
    • Salat ul Hajaat. Two rakat asking for help in a time of need.
    • Salat ul Taraweh. Prayed after fard and before witr of Isha salah during Ramadan. Can be 12 rakat or 20 rakat, in units of two. Often performed in the masjid (20 rakat) to enable recitation of the whole Quran during the month.
    • Salat ul Tasbeeh. Four rakat, can be prayed at anytime, with promised rewards of forgiving ones sins [Abu Dawud]. Consists of reciting zikr (SUBHANALLAHI WA HAMDULILLAHI WALA ILAHA ILLALLAHU WALLAHU AKBAR) 300 times during the salat:
      • 15 times before Surah Al Fatihah, 10 times during ruku, 10 times after standing from ruku, 10 times during first sajdah, 10 times after rising from first sajdah, 10 times during second sajdah, 10 times after rising from second sajdah. Thus 75 times in each rakat, repeated 4 times to give total of 300.

In general, nafl salah can be prayed for any reason, for thanks, for guidance for forgiveness, for help and so forth.

    Makruh Times

There are a few times of the day when it is not allowed to pray salah (Makruh – strongly disliked but not forbidden). These times are related to the rising and setting of the sun and when it is directly overhead in the sky. The reason being to avoid any resemblance of praying to the sun, as the polytheists did.

    • When the sun is rising, until it is fully risen – approximately 15 min after sunrise.
    • At midday when the sun is directly overhead at its zenith – for approximately 10 min.
    • When the sun is setting – approximately 15 min before sunset.
    • Additionally, no nafl salah:
      • From dawn until the sun has fully risen.
      • After Asr salah until sunset.
      • Between sunset and completion of Maghrib fard.

    How to Improve Ones Salah

Unfortunately, many non-Arabic speaking believers pray Salah without knowing the meanings of what we say. Sometimes we may not be concentrating fully on what we are saying. This absent mindedness is a result of shaytan who makes it his duty to distract the believer from his salah [7:16-17] so they cannot attain closeness with Allah SWT. One should remember that Allah SWT does not accept the salah of a wandering mind.

We should pray with the certainty that we are standing in front of Allah SWT, with sincerity and devotion and hope of His Mercy. The following tips will help to increase the quality of our salah and strengthen our connection with Allah SWT:

    • Plan our daily activities around the salah times [70:22-23].
    • Be punctual with salah and pray at the earliest hour. The deed most loved by Allah is the prayer performed on time [Muslim].
    • Pray as much fard salah as possible in congregation [2:43].
    • Take some time to prepare ourselves prior to salah, to achieve the correct frame of mind for worship of Allah SWT. Avoid praying when mentally or physically fatigued and clear our minds of any worldly thoughts.
    • Remember, we are standing in front of Allah SWT when we pray and are speaking directly to Him. Be conscious that He can see us.
    • Perform wudu (ablution) with care and perfection.
    • Learn the translation of the Arabic phrases we recite during salah so we can reflect and concentrate upon their meanings.
    • Recite prayer in a whispering voice to help focus our minds on our words and avoid distracting thoughts.
    • Avoid being distracted by nearby sounds, pictures or physically looking around.
    • Be measured and purposeful in our movements during salah.
    • Exalt Allah SWT with additional praises when bowing during ruku.
    • Make dua (supplication) to Allah SWT when prostrating during sajda. It is in this position that we are closest to Allah SWT.
    • Remember death and the Akhira and pray as if this is our final prayer, with hope and awe asking Allah SWT for mercy and forgiveness.

There is punishment for a prayer not performed satisfactorily. All the above Insha Allah will help us strive to perfect our prayer, deepen our connection with Allah SWT and thereby reap the most spiritual reward.

Verily, I have been prohibited from reciting the Quran while bowing or prostrating in prayer. As for bowing, you should exalt the Lord Almighty. As for prostration, you should exert yourself in supplication, for it is worthy that you be answered [Muslim]

    Adhan – Call to Prayer

The adhan (announcement) is used to call believers to prayer. It is unique in Islam compared to other religions as the human voice is used rather than the ringing of bells or the blowing of a horn. This form of call to prayer came to Abdullah Ibn Zaid RA in a dream and was approved by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Bilal RA was the first caller to prayer (Mu’adhdhin).

It is a direct invitation for meeting with Allah SWT. Its words contain meaningful language, glorifying the Lord and His Messenger ﷺ. There are many different styles of recitation, all melodious and fully captivating to the listener. Two such examples are given below.

    Ahdan – Islam Sobhi

    Come to prayer

    Come to prayer

    Come to success

    Come to success

Allah is Great, Allah is Great

There is no deity except Allah

    Significance of Adhan

Saying “Allah is the Greatest” testifies to the Ultimate Power of the Creator of the Universe, Who is in control of everything that happens in this world and the heavens. Reciting the first pillar of Islam, “There is none worthy of worship except Allah,” reinforces ones belief in His Supremacy and asserts that there is nothing comparable to Him.

The Adhan then bears witness that Muhammad ﷺ is the Messenger of Allah SWT, another central tenet of Islamic conviction.

The expressions “Come to Salah” and “Come towards Success” inform the believer that salah is the means to success in the world and the Akhira. It is a direct communication with Allah SWT resulting in forgiveness of sins and attainment of His blessings.

    Fajr Adhan

For the morning Fajr prayer the phrase “As salatu khairum minan naum” (Salah is better than sleeping) is added after “Come to success.” This signifies the fact that waking up purely for the sake of meeting with Allah SWT has the greatest blessings. It is definitely superior to being in an ignorant state of slumber.

    Iqamah

The Iqamah is the second call to prayer, pronounced more rapidly and less melodiously than the adhan, immediately before the salah commences. The phrase “Qad qamatis salah” (the prayer has been established) is added after “Come to success”.

The Sunni Hanifi and the Shia sects repeat the verses the same number of times as the adhan; other sects repeat each verse once. The iqamah should be said both in congregation and also individually at home.

Paradise is affirmed for him who pronounces the Adhan, sixty Hasanah (good deed) will be written for him, and for every Iqamah, he will get thirty Hasanah [Ibn Majah]
